Rock Foundations - Park & Ride Scheme, Gibraltar

Park & Ride Scheme, Gibraltar

With space always at a premium in Gibraltar the Government planned a number of new car parking facilities with the largest being the Park and Ride facility situated in Devils Tower Road.

The Rock Foundations (Gibraltar) engineering team worked alongside a local engineering consultancy to provide a piling solution for the structure. Having trialled the CHD pile as an option, a piling technique that been used successfully at the nearby New Airport Terminal ground engineering project, the team decided that a driven pile solution would be the preferable option at this site.

Ground conditions proved to be extremely onerous and varied across the site with the rock feature varying in depth and strength presenting the engineering team with a number of challenges to overcome within a rigid budget and programme timeframe. Plant utlised on this project included both the Klemm 802 and the 5009 rig.

The pile type was a driven steel tube which was driven through the made ground, sands and then refusing in the rock. A number of load tests were carried out to ensure the pile was able to withstand the load capacity as per the engineers design requirements.
