Rock Foundations - Maida Vale

Maida Vale

Presented with the task of ensuring the groundwork for a number of luxury residential dwellings at Maida Vale (Gibraltar) was up to the task of supporting the new structures, Rock Foundations was asked to provide it’s expertise to overcome a number of geotechnical challenges prior to the commencement of the next phase of building works at the site.

Situated approximately halfway up the rock, the location was not the only challenge presented to the engineers of Rock Foundations as any solution would require drilling into the hard limestone of the famous obelisk.

A combination of 200mm drill bar piles and 240mm DTH piles where the rock was harder were selected as an ideal solution to provide piled foundations for the cantilevered elements of the properties.

In addition to the piling works Rock Foundations (Gibraltar) also installed a large number of rock anchors at the rear of the properties to provide slope stabilisation. These anchors were achieved using a DTH hammer to drill a 76mm diameter hole 4m into the hard rock. The rig employed on this particular project was our Klemm 806 along with our 17,000 Litre compressor.
